Digital Resources that  Help Your Child "Open and Grow"

Because teaching writing can be challenging, parents deserve low-prep, easy to use resources that improve their child's language arts skills.

Digital resources should not take hours of preparation for parents or be difficult for children to use.
When this happens

  • Parents become frustrated and end up not using the resource

  • Children develop negative feelings about writing

  • The resource collects dust along with other things that didn't work

With our digital resources, we aim to create enjoyable and memorable learning experiences, all "kid-approved" before release.

You get more than just a digital resource.

1. Engaging handouts
2. Rigorous, yet fun content to enhance language arts in your homeschool
3. "Open and Grow" resources that are easy for children to use
4. Low or no prep for parents
5.Games and activities to enhance their learning

Meet Your Guide: Alicia Brown
Certified Writing Instructor
Charter School Vendor

I'm Mrs. Brown, a fellow homeschooler and creator of Write with Mrs. Brown (WWMB). With over a decade of homeschooling experience, I launched WWMB in Dayton, Ohio to make teaching writing easier for parents. I have also created a nurturing space where students can grow into proficient writers. My aim is simple: to build exceptional young writers and teach parents how to be excellent writing coaches.

If your student is performing at or above grade level, use these guidelines: For students in grades 4-6 (ages 9–12), with no IEW experience or in need of review - enroll in SSS-1A or with strong IEW experience from Level 1A - enroll in SSS-2A. For students in grades 6-9 (ages 12–15), with no IEW experience or in need of review - enroll in SSS-1B or with strong IEW experience from Level 1B - enroll in SSS-2B.These students may also consider a theme-based option. The theme-based options rotate each year and include U.S. History Based Writing, Medieval History Based Writing, Modern World History, or Narnia Book 1. For students in grade 10 or higher (ages 15+), with no IEW experience, in need of review, or with strong IEW experience from Level 2B - enroll in SSS-1C. These students may also consider a themed-based option. The theme-based options rotate each year and include Advanced U.S. History Based Writing, University Ready Writing, or Narnia Book 2. This level is only taught in private tutoring.
  • What is the cost for classes in 2023-2024?

  • Would you provide the student’s final grade for a high school transcript?
Yes. Parents who need grades at the end of the year will receive a final grade for each student.
  • How much time will I need to schedule each day for my student to be successful with their online class?
Mrs. Brown’s online SSS classes provide support to families who are using the SSS video-based course and materials. Please note that the video is watched by the student outside of the live class, not during the live class. In general, an average day of work will last about 45 minutes. Of course, this will always vary, depending on the student's needs. There will be roughly 30-40 minutes of video or writing time plus 10–15 minutes for Fix It! Grammar. Middle and high school students will likely need some additional time for the more extensive compositions later in the year. Mrs. Brown also offers classes that provide support to families who are using IEW’s theme-based materials which are NOT video-based. Students should be prepared to take notes during the live class. Since outlining and brainstorming is done during class time, Fix It! Grammar is not taught with this class. Please budget about 45 minutes per day outside of class to complete homework. On the day of the student's live class, they will spend about one hour online as the teacher guides them through that day's complete lesson.
  • What support do parents receive?
Parents, you are your child’s most valuable partner (MVP). Because of this, we provide parental support so you are able to become an expert writing coach for your student(s). After every live class, Mrs. Brown is available to answer student and parent questions. Parents are also invited to a monthly parent huddle so they can have their questions answered and receive support from other parents who are a part of Mrs. Brown’s writing team. This community for parents, live classes for students, and Mrs. Brown form a triangle of support to ensure everyone is successful.
  • Do my students have to know IEW, or must they have taken a class to be able to take IEW online courses?
No, students are not expected to know our method prior to enrolling in our online writing classes. However, since grammar is cumulative, it is important that they have mastered the concepts in the previous book if they are registering for a class with Fix It! Grammar. Parents are welcome to adjust the level of the grammar program the student completes at home. For example, if the SSS1B class teaches Fix It! Grammar Book 3, the parent is allowed to have their student complete Fix It! Grammar Book 2 at home. The student will still be able to participate in the conversation about grammar during the live class because some concepts will overlap.
  • Where should I buy my materials?
We highly recommend purchasing all materials directly through IEW because they have a 100% money-back guarantee.
  • Is my student required to attend class? What if we can’t make it due to vacation or sickness?
All classes are recorded, so students who miss classes can access the recorded sessions. Sessions are available for the following week and are then replaced when the new week begins.
  • What materials are needed?
All of the online classes list the materials in the class description. Please note that materials are not included in the cost of class.
  • How long are the live classes?
Classes meet for one hour once a week. The total year consists of 30-live classes broken into two 15-week semesters.
  • What is being taught in the live classes that is not on the videos? What is the purpose of the online class if the student will be watching Mr. Pudewa’s recorded class every week?
Students who take online classes from Mrs. Brown benefit in five ways: With engaging instruction from Mrs. Brown, students receive live teaching that reinforces and provides added insight into the video instruction. For parents, this means you can be certain that students are getting the full value out of the program. You’ll also have someone else, Mrs. Brown, reinforcing all of the things that you are already encouraging them to do at home. Through the live classes, students benefit from lively interaction with other students while receiving direction and accountability for composition and grammar assignments. Live classes also include an author spotlight portion that allows the students to examine how published authors use the same literary devices they are learning in this class. The online video classes add a year of Fix It! Grammar, including tips and accountability in class. Please note that Fix It! Grammar is not included in theme-based courses. Perhaps most importantly, students receive timely and helpful feedback on every written composition they submit by the deadline. In addition to the live weekly class, Mrs. Brown offers a weekly study hall where students may come to ask brief questions or receive help from peers. Study hall “after parties” where we play educational games occasionally and build community amongst the students have become a tradition for students on Mrs. Brown’s writing team.
  • What if the IEW Online Course doesn’t work for our family? Can we get a refund?
No. Tuition for live classes are non-refundable. However, if you purchase your materials from IEW, they have a 100% money back guarantee on all product purchases.
  • How much and how often will the instructor give feedback on my student's papers?
Mrs. Brown gives feedback on all written compositions turned in on time and returns papers to students within one or two weeks of submission. Late papers are not accepted.
  • Does my student have to take a placement test?
No, students are not required to take a placement test. Parents are responsible for ensuring they place their student in the appropriate level. Parents may contact IEW customer service or contact Mrs. Brown if they need guidance on placing students in the correct level.
  • How much parental involvement is required?
Parents are to remain the primary educators in their student’s coursework. This means keeping their student on task during class time, reading every assignment before it is turned in (especially with Levels A and B), and ensuring that coursework is properly submitted.
  • What are my payment options?
The payment options are as follows: Full Year: Pay $25 to register. Full tuition is due by August 1st Semester: Pay $25 to register. First-semester tuition is due Aug 1st. • If both of my students are taking the same class, do they both need separate computers?
Yes, each student must have access to his or her own computer. Please keep in mind that classroom interaction is limited when using a mobile device to attend class.
  • Is the curriculum included in the tuition price?
No, required curriculum is a separate expense.
  • How are assignments submitted and returned?
We use Google Classroom. Students upload their papers through the classroom using a Google Doc preferably. Students receive editing marks and comments directly in their Google document. A digital rubric that matches the rubric in the guide is used to provide a grade. Feedback is also provided on each assignment so students are aware what improvements need to be made. All papers during the first semester may be edited and resubmitted within three days of receiving a grade if a student wants to improve their score. Feedback and grades are based on the checklist provided in the curriculum.
